Kevin McCloskey has previously created 36-page hardcover picture books for first readers (grades K-1) about earthworms and pigeons. Here in TOON Books’ “Giggle and Learn” series, he covers fish; from the common oceanic species like clownfish and seahorses that children might see in office aquariums, to the goldfish they may keep at home. He presents a fish for each letter of the alphabet, tells why some popular aquatic life like starfish and jellyfish are not really fish, and more. “Did you know? Since scuba divers can’t talk under water, they have signs for each fish.”

After presenting general fish, McCloskey gives a history of the goldfish as a pet, from a thousand or more years ago when only the Emperor of China was allowed to have them, to today when they are a common pet.

McCloskey’s books have won a School Library Journal Top Ten Graphic Novel accolade. This small $12.95 hardcover will be popular with 4- to 7-year-olds who want to read their own book that will teach them facts about a common pet and, by extension, other fish.
