This is not a book as much as a $24.99 album of forty large-sized (12” X 16”) posters of the nine “Planet of the Apes” theatrical films, from the first in 1968 to 2014’s “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes”. They are printed on thick cardboard, and are designed for removal from this album and posting in a fan’s bedroom.
The forty posters are a mixture of poster-sized sharp enlargements of key stills, publicity shots, and reproductions of theatrical posters. Most of the latter are of the original American movie posters, with a few French posters and some novelty posters such as one for a 1974 marathon screening of the first five theatrical movies. A few of the posters actually do their movie a disservice by emphasizing flaws in the ape makeup, or rubber masks rather than carefully-applied makeup in crowd scenes, but in general this is an excellent collection for the fan of the whole “Planet of the Apes” movie franchise. The old movie posters are comparatively expensive, hard to locate today, and are much more fragile than these sturdy mounted-on-cardboard reproductions.
However, these are obvious reproductions for the modern fan rather than the serious cinematic student or collector. Buy for a gift to a film-fan, rather than a library wanting a comprehensive book about the almost-fifty-year film franchise.
