In the book Ballet Shoes by Noel Streatfeild the three girls are Petrova, Posy and Pauline.  Each of the girls was an orphan and their Uncle GUM, who had found and rescued each from an orphanage,was a famous fossil collector. When two of the girls started school, no one knew what their last name was so they decided to call themselves Fossil in honor of their missing Uncle.
