This book follows alternating points of view between Roslyn, a former  ballerina who came from a small backwoods community to become a star who is doubly injured following a car accident and the subsequent stillbirth of a baby, and a preteen girl named Damascus who lives a rather wild and uncontrolled life with a mother dead from cancer and a very detached father. Roslyn meets Damascus and her family when she comes to a remote area in Georgia called Manny’s Island to rent a cabin for the summer to get away and rebuild her life. What Roslyn doesn’t count on is little Damascus determined to follow through on a gift left behind with a note from her mother, with seeds she feels must be nurtured on Manny’s Island. While not a book of completely happy endings, it is an amazing voyage of how two people who begin not knowing one another can form the bond of family, and how ultimately one must grow beyond the past.  I stayed up way past my bedtime trying to finish it. Just be advised there are probably a half dozen incidences of cursing in it as a couple characters – including Damascus – get frustrated at various points.
